How to Build a Garden Fish Pond-a Ready Plan
Published on Tuesday, 15 June 2010

Building a pond is not as simple as it looks. It requires a lot of planning and hard work to build one. However, the rewards are sure worth it. A garden fish pond will serve as the focal point of the garden. Further, a fish pond can boost the beauty of your garden.
Garden fishponds can be built with simple pond supplies, steps and ready plan. If you want to have a garden fish pond, the first thing that you need to decide on is the type of fish pond you wish to build. It can either be in-ground or raised. In-ground ponds are the most typical type of fish pond which often resembles a natural fish pond. A raised fish pond on the other hand, is constructed above the ground from bricks, blocks and stones.
Once you've chosen the type of garden pond, think about its location. Take into consideration the amount of light you need. Shades are fine for ‘fish only' ponds. But if you wish to have lilies in your pond, you will need four to six hours of direct sunlight on the pond. Also check on the suspended trees as these can also be a source of pond pollution. If you should decide to build a pond beneath a tree, avoid deciduous trees. Otherwise, you'll spend your entire life pulling out the leaves out of the water.
A typical garden pond for goldfish and lilies need only be around two feet deep.  It can be deeper to keep the water from freezing during winter. When digging out the pond, be sure to make it a foot wider than the original plan. The pond usually appears smaller when completed.
For fish pond inspirations, check out leaflets from your local pond suppliers. By looking at the photos and reading their descriptions, you will have a better idea of the garden fish pond you wish to build and how to do it precisely.
